Your accomodation in Kiel

Student dorms and other offers of the Studentenwerk:

At the beginning of each term it can be really hard to find a room in Kiel. So the best option for you is to apply as erly as possible for a room ir a single room apartment in one of the sutdent dorms of the "Studentenwerk Schleswig-Holstein". Therefor you need to contact the Studentenwerk directly:
Studentenwerk Schleswig-Holstein
Steenbeker Weg 20
24106 Kiel
More information can be found here.
On this website you can also find the information about the joined-living project "Wohnen für Hilfe" of the Studentenwerk. The concept is that a student lives with a family, older, or invalid person. Instead of paying rent, you will help them for one hour per each square meter of your room. You just have to pay a part of the costs for heating and electricity. There are other student dorms in Kiel that you can find on the website of the International Center (IC).

Private flat share:

Of course you can also look for a private rented flat or shared flat. Check out the online platform "WG-gesucht". It is the most common way to find a flat share in Kiel and there are many offers for different flat types. But the offer is not as big as the number of students looking for a room, so try to get as many interviews as you can. In order to be invited to a visit of the flat or a Skype interview it is very important to write a nice long text to introduce yourself. Don't be too picky and din't set your standards too high. You will most likely not find the perfekt flat with the perfect flatmates.

Short term accommodation for the first few days:

You don't have a flat and the term is about to start soon? Don't freak out just yet. Book a bed in one of Kiel's hostels for the first week. It will be easier to look for a room once you are in Kiel and maybe you meet someone here that knows about a free room. Here are the addresses of some hostels in Kiel:

What else?

  • Rundfunkbeitrag
In Germany everybody has to pay a "Rundfunkbeitrag" of 17.50€/ month for radio and television, no matter if you use it or not. International Students and Erasmus Students are not excluded from this rule. If you move to a shared flat, ask your flatmates, because somebody probably already pays the fee. Normally flatmates share the fee between them, because it only has to be paid once per flat. If you live alone you have to pay the full price. You will get a letter with the details shortly after you moved into your new home.
  • From bathtub to crate of beer
On the website of the International Center you can find useful vocabulary around accommodation and living. We are not talking about boring lists here, but little illustrations of different rooms and situations. Overtop of the things you find the work in German, Chinese, English, Spanish, etc.. This picture does not only help you to communicate with Germany but also with internationals from all over the world.
